Fever is the body's normal response to infection, and most fevers in healthy adults settle within two to three days with rest and fluids. Some situations need a doctor sooner.
Consult a doctor if
- The fever lasts more than three days.
- It reaches 103°F (39.4°C) or higher.
- It comes with a rash, severe headache, painful urination or repeated vomiting.
- You have diabetes, a heart or kidney condition, or are pregnant.
Seek emergency care (call 112) if there is
- A stiff neck, confusion or unusual drowsiness.
- Difficulty breathing or chest pain.
- A seizure.
- Any fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or more in a baby under three months.
Keep a simple log of temperatures and the times you took medicine. It helps your doctor a great deal.
