A consultation goes best when you and your doctor are working from the same picture. A little preparation makes that easy.
Before your consultation
- Write down your main concern in one sentence. Start the consultation with it.
- Note when each symptom began, whether it comes and goes, and what makes it better or worse.
- Bring every medicine you take, including supplements and anything from a chemist without a prescription.
- Bring old reports and prescriptions, even if they seem unrelated.
During the consultation
- Be honest about habits like smoking, alcohol and sleep. Your doctor is there to help, not judge.
- If you do not understand a word, ask. A good doctor will happily explain again.
- Ask three things before you leave: what is the likely cause, what should I do now, and when should I come back.
It helps to have a family member join the call if you are anxious or the problem is complicated. A second pair of ears remembers what one forgets.
General information only. It does not replace a consultation with a doctor.
